Steel Building Erection & Fabrication Work

Steel Building Erection & Fabrication Work

Fabrication is the process of cutting, shaping, and assembling individual steel components from raw materials (like wide-flange beams, steel plate, and coil) into the final parts that will be shipped to the job site.

Key Steps in Fabrication:

Shop Drawing Creation: Detailers create highly detailed drawings from the engineer's design. These drawings specify every dimension, hole, weld, and bolt location for every single piece of steel. BIM (Building Information Modeling) is now standard for this process.

Material Procurement & Preparation: Raw steel is ordered and delivered to the shop. It is then shot-blasted to remove mill scale and rust, and often primed for corrosion protection.

Cutting & Drilling:

Cutting: Beams and plates are cut to length using saws, shears, or advanced methods like plasma or laser cutting for complex shapes.

Drilling/Hole Punching: Holes for bolts are precisely drilled or punched using CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machines for absolute accuracy.

Fitting & Welding: Components are temporarily "fit up" or clamped together to check for accuracy. Then, certified welders perform the permanent welds as specified in the design (e.g., full-penetration welds for moment connections, fillet welds for shear connections).

Quality Control (QC): This is continuous. QC inspectors verify dimensions, check weld quality (visually and with methods like ultrasonic testing), and ensure all work conforms to the drawings and standards (AISC, AWS).

Surface Treatment & Painting: After welding, the finished pieces are often given a final coat of paint or a fire-resistant coating if specified.

Labeling & Shipping: Every piece is marked with a unique identifier (e.g., "Column A-1," "Beam B-5"), bundled with its connecting pieces, and shipped to the construction site in a logical sequence for erection.

Common Application

Site Preparation & Foundation:

The site must be ready, with the concrete foundation cured and the anchor bolts precisely set.

Erectors verify the anchor bolt locations and elevations before starting.

Receiving & Staging: Fabricated steel is delivered, offloaded, and staged in a laydown area. The erection crew inventories the materials against the shipping list.

Rigging & Crane Setup: A crane (mobile, tower, or crawler) is selected and positioned based on the building's size and weight of the components. Riggers are responsible for safely attaching the steel to the crane.

The Erection Sequence (The "Raise"): This follows a carefully planned sequence, typically:

Step 1: Erect Columns. The first columns are lifted, set onto the anchor bolts, and temporarily braced with guys (cables) to keep them plumb.

Step 2: Connect Primary Beams. The first set of main beams (e.g., connecting the initial columns) is lifted and bolted into place, creating stable bays.

Step 3: "Frame-Up" the Structure. The crew continues erecting columns and primary beams bay-by-bay until the main structural frame is complete.

Step 4: Install Secondary Framing. Purlins (roof) and girts (walls) are installed, connecting the primary frames and providing support for the cladding.

Step 5: Install Bracing. Permanent diagonal steel rod or cable bracing is installed to provide stability against lateral forces like wind and earthquakes.

Bolting & Welding:

Bolting: Connections are initially made with a few "snug-tight" bolts. Once the frame is stable and plumb, crews follow up to fully tighten all high-strength bolts to the specified tension ("turn-of-the-nut" method or using calibrated wrenches).

Field Welding: Performed where specified by the design, often for moment connections or splices. This requires strict quality control, often more challenging than in the shop due to weather conditions.

Final Alignment & Plumbing: The entire structure is checked for alignment and plumb. Adjustments are made using the turnbuckles on the temporary bracing before final bolt tightening.

Decking & Cladding: Once the structural frame is signed off, the crew can begin installing the metal roof and wall panels.
